I am fortunate to have been invited to serve as part of the leadership team, for several local organizations. The past year has been one of transition for three in particular:
Fairfield Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center has been working on restructuring and focus on providing excellent mediation services, and equally important training for mediators get and maintain certification and support people in finding sustainable solutions to conflicts.
Ten Thousand Villages, which supports fair trade is defining new relationships with programs that work directly with the artisans in ways we hope will let us to support a wider array of programs and allow us to make a market for more of their products.
Open Doors, has moved from operating its seasonal shelter program to operating the new year round Navigation Center established by the City. We are grateful for the strong support from the community which has really stepped up to make the Center a great place for those experiencing homelessness to get the support they need.
Transitions like these require a lot of work and creativity. It has been exciting to be part of these journeys, and I look forward to watching each organization continue to do great things for the people each serves.

Over the past few years, I’ve made a conscious effort to step up my volunteerism and to find ways for me to contribute back to the community I’ve called home for a long time. While I didn’t initially get involved with these organizations and groups for recognition, this newsletter came at a good time with some exciting recent achievements for the organizations that I share my time with:
- Our local Community Foundation hosted its 8th annual Great Community Give, in which both our local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency and Massanutten Regional Library (the two boards I serve on) exceeded their fundraising goals of $130,000 and $8,500 respectively.
- Massanutten Regional Library was recognized as the Non-profit of the Year at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce banquet!
- My wife and I participated in the latest annual Blacks Run Clean Up Day in Harrisonburg!
While there is always still more work to do and support to give, these successes continue to give me energy to give back and help others.
